Overview:

The Senior Associate Athletic Director/ Chief Financial Steward directs and oversees the finance unit of Yale’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is the financial spokesman for the department. This position reports directly the Director of Athletics with a dual report to Vice President of Finance and University Chief Financial Officer.

The Senior Associate Athletic Director/ Chief Financial Steward provides in-depth and comprehensive financial analysis, developing and executing short and long term strategic financial plans that align the department’s goals to contribute to fiscal growth and sustainability. Drives and leads the financial vision for the department, including forecasting and budgeting processes.  Ensures accuracy, transparency, and realistic financial projections. Analyzes financial  activities and performance against budget, makes adjustments and takes action as needed.

This role manages the internal control systems to safeguard financial assets of the department and ensure financial activities are in compliance with state, federal, Ivy and NCAA policies. Recommends and implements improvements to ensure the integrity of the financial information. Works proactively to mitigate internal and external audit risks. Serve as lead staff on all Audit/Finance Committees.

Responsible for building and managing a team of high-performance administrative and financial professionals within the Athletics Business Office.

Essential Duties:

Financial Strategy & Planning:

  1. Serves as chief financial steward for the department.
  2. Provides in-depth and comprehensive financial analysis and advice.
  3. Develops and executes short and long term strategic financial plans that align our department’s goals to contribute to fiscal growth and sustainability.
  4. Leads financial forecasting and budgeting processes, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and realistic financial projections. Analyzes financial  activities and performance against budget, makes adjustments and takes action as needed.
  5. Develops and manages all budgets both organizational and programmatic for the department.
  6. Implements financial risk management strategies to mitigate risk and ensure compliance. Serves as risk management administrator. Implements and maintains strong internal controls to provide reasonable assurance of effective and appropriate resource use, accurate financial information, adherence to contractual obligations and agreements, policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements. Identifies, communicates, addresses, and escalates risks in a timely and appropriate manner to protect the assets, resources, information and reputation of the organization and the University.
  7. Leads presentation in annual University Budget Advisory group.Partners with department leadership on financial planning for capital projects.
  8. Responsible for budget submission in YBT and department narrative.

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  1. Oversees preparation and presentation of accurate, timely, and comprehensive financial reports.
  2. Conducts thorough financial analysis that identifies trends and potential areas for improvement. Implements strategies for enhancing financial performance.
  3. Establishes robust financial internal controls and compliance measures that are, at times, stricter than central university procedures.
  4. Streamlines financial processes to enhance our department’s efficiency, accuracy, and accountability. Responsible for budget platform data and improve data integrity.
  5. Ensures completion of all financial services to department (procurement, IT, central finance, FRQ)

Strategic Partner:

  1. Serves as Chief financial analyst and advisor Optimizes and identifies financial resources and solutions to advance our department’s mission and vision.
  2. Supports organization and program leaders in conceptualizing, prioritizing, and planning new programs or program changes. Supports, and when necessary, drives the organization’s process for strategic planning with key staff and stakeholders.
  3. Develops and implements the financial strategy of long-range planning for the department.
  4. Manages information systems, and regulatory compliance. Conducts due diligence and provides insightful recommendations to myself regarding financial decisions.
  5. Provides strong leadership, mentorship, and guidance to our finance team.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  1. Ability to build relationships with key athletic department, university, and industry individuals to result in strong collaboration.
  2. Demonstrated fiscal responsibility and comprehensive knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, and analysis.
  3. Advanced budget variance analysis, revenue, and expense forecasting.
  4. Advanced level skills in Excel with ability to develop and use functions for moderately complex spreadsheets. Knowledge and ability to use database management software.

Principal Responsibilities:

Supports organization and program leaders in conceptualizing, prioritizing, and planning new programs or program changes. Supports, and when necessary, drives the organization’s process for strategic planning with key staff and stakeholders.
  • Develops and implements the financial strategy of long-range planning for the units.
  • Manages information systems, and regulatory compliance.
  • Conducts due diligence and provides insightful recommendations to myself regarding financial decisions.
  • Provides strong leadership, mentorship, and guidance to our finance team.

Required Education & Experience:

Minimum of a bachelor's degree and ten years progressively responsible experience 5 of which are in a leadership role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education & Experience:

Ten years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including at least five years in a leadership role within FP&A, strategic finance, or higher education financial planning. Strong background in financial reporting and presentation of financial results. Masters degree; experience in higher education.

Salary Range:

$120,000-$260,000
