Director of Athletics

Position Summary:

The Senior Executive Associate Athletic Director, Business Strategy and Capital Projects works closely with all athletics staff. The position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Business Office and Athletics Facilities, Events & Operations. Oversight of the business unit involves handling disbursements and accounting for the athletic department, managing taxes, audits, journal entries, deferred revenue, balance sheet reconciliations, benefit taxation, creating the annual budget and overseeing financial records and reporting for various offices. This role is also responsible for overseeing the strategic planning and execution of capital projects within the athletic department. This role includes managing the development and coordinating large-scale renovations and construction projects and ensuring financial oversight and compliance. The position works closely with senior management, coaches, and external stakeholders to align projects with the university's long-term goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for working with all area supervisors and sport administrators to develop an annual budget working within University guidelines.
  • Responsible for departmental financial operations including accounting, forecasting, audit and tax compliance and annual reports; develops and manages operating and capital budgets. Provides financial and business guidance as appropriate.
  • Oversees the planning, execution, and completion of capital projects, including renovations and new construction in conjunction with Facilities Design and Construction.
  • Collaborates with university officials, contractors, and external stakeholders to ensure project alignment and successful execution.
  • Maintains working knowledge of tax legislation relating to students athletes, donors, unrelated business income, and intercollegiate athletics in general.
  • Completes special projects and analyses assigned by the Senior Deputy Athletic Director or Athletic Director.
  • Identifies and mitigates risks associated with capital projects and business operations.
  • Prepares and presents reports on project status, financial performance, and strategic initiatives to senior management.
  • Assists in the development of long-term plans for athletic facilities and business operations.
  • Provides supervision and guidance to Business Office staff. Functions in the Business Office include purchasing, payroll, cash, check requisitions, and accounting operations.
  • Meets on a regular basis with senior departmental staff and coaches to review operating results and plan business strategies.
  • Approves all expenditures to include (but not limited to) check requisitions, business expense reimbursement forms, purchase requisitions, invoices, interdepartmental requisitions, and journals for the Athletic Department.
  • Responsible for coordinating the reconciliation with Hard Rock Stadium after each home football game.
  • Develops, analyzes and maintains various reports based upon current and historical athletic department revenues and expenditures.
  • Liaison to the Budget Office and the Controller’s Office.
  • Prepares annual internal and external required financial reports. Interfaces with University and external auditors.
  • Completes reports for EADA to the federal government.
  • Year End Closing—Responsible for various reports and accounting related to year-end closing and audit, which includes but are not limited to the research of information, preparing reports, account adjustments, balancing of numerous accounts, payment of expenditures related to fiscal year, and budget adjustments.
  • Reviews departmental business agreements and contracts from a financial perspective and assists in negotiations as required. Develops funding plans for major capital acquisitions and prepares periodic capital plan updates for senior University management.
  • Provides financial data to the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA as required.
  • Reviews operations to assure that internal controls are adequate to safeguard assets.
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference, institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Deputy Athletic Director. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Candidate Requirements:

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree required

  • Minimum three to five years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines with limited resources and multiple competing priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate well with others
  • Solid computer skills
