SITUATION OVERVIEW:

ZRG has been engaged to recruit a Vice President for Institutional Advancement for Philander Smith University, a small, privately supported, historically black four-year liberal arts institution related to the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the UnitedMethodist Church.

ABOUT PHILANDER SMITH UNIVERSITY:

Founded in 1877, Philander Smith University is a small, privately  supported, historically Black, four-year liberal arts institution related to  the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. The University currently offers four undergraduate degrees -- the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Business  Administration, and the Bachelor of Social Work -- and one graduate degree,  the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Its mission is "to graduate academically accomplished students,  grounded as advocates for social justice, determined to change the world for  the better." As the only United Negro College Fund member institution in Arkansas,  Philander Smith University strives to provide a quality education for all  regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin or ethnic background. Philander Smith University is the result of the first attempt west of  the Mississippi River to make education available to freedmen (former African  American slaves).

HISTORY

In 1882, Dr. G.W. Gray, president of Little RockUniversity, the institution for the Arkansas Annual Conference of the UnitedMethodist Church, met Mrs. Adeline Smith, widow of Mr. Philander Smith of OakPark, Ill., while soliciting funds. The late Philander Smith had been a liberal donor to Asiatic Missions and had developed an interest in the work of the church in the South. In making her gift to Dr. Gray, Mrs. Smith designated$10,500 for Walden Seminary. The trustees accepted the gift and gave it special recognition by changing the name of the struggling Walden Seminary to PhilanderSmith College. A new site for the school had already been purchased at Eleventh and Izard Streets. The gift made by Mrs. Smith was a significant contribution towards the construction of Budlong Hall, the first brick building on the new site.

Chartered as a four-year college in1883, the institution awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1888. Over the next several decades, leadership passed from its first president, Rev. ThomasMason, to successive presidents including Rev. James Monroe Cox and Rev. GeorgeCollins Taylor, who helped shape the college’s early growth.

Under Dr. M.L. Harris, who became president in 1936, the campus expanded significantly, including the purchase of the adjacent Little Rock Junior College site in 1948, and the college achieved full accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in1949. Leadership continued to evolve with Dr. Roosevelt David Crockett, Dr.Earnest Dixon, Dr. Walter R. Hazzard, Dr. Grant S. Shockley, and Dr. Hazo W.Carter guiding the institution through mid-20th-century growth. Dr. Myer L.Titus, Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed—the college’s first female president—and subsequent leaders, including Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough and Dr. Johnny Moore, carried the college into the 21st century.

In recent years, Philander Smith expanded academically and institutionally. The college launched its first graduate program, the MBA, in 2023, and in August 2023, it officially becamePhilander Smith University, the only HBCU in Central Arkansas with university status. Leadership has continued to evolve with interim presidents, includingCynthia A. Bond Hopson, Ph.D., in 2023 and Dr. Maurice D. Gipson in 2024, guiding the university through this new chapter in its history.
