American Youth Soccer Organization

National Executive Director
Torrance, California

Reports to President, National Board of Directors

Background:

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), a nonprofit organization, is one of the largest and most respected youth sports programs in the United States. Founded in 1964 in a garage in Torrance, California, AYSO has played a pivotal role in shaping the growth of soccer in the U.S. for over 50 years. From its earliest days with just nine teams and a handful of passionate volunteers, the organization’s mission has remained steadfast: to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs nationwide, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to be introduced to and enjoy the beautiful game of soccer.

At the heart of AYSO’s impact is a six-pronged approach that engages participants at every level, empowering them to grow within their teams, organizations, and communities. These six core philosophies ensure a positive, inclusive, and developmental soccer experience for all:

  • Everyone Plays®: Every player is guaranteed at least 50% of playing time in every game.

  • Balanced Teams: Teams are formed to ensure equitable competition and diverse teammate experiences.

  • Open Registration: All youth and adults are welcome, ensuring broad access to the sport.

  • Positive Coaching: Coaches are required to foster encouragement, skill development, and enjoyment.

  • Good Sportsmanship: Programs emphasize mutual respect over a win-at-all-costs mentality.

  • Player Development: Every player is supported in developing soccer skills and knowledge to maximize enjoyment.

Together, these tenets ensure fair play, skill development, and broad access, promoting athletic growth, teamwork, confidence, and lifelong engagement in the game.

In its commitment to providing lifelong soccer opportunities to communities nationwide, AYSO is organized into Sections, Areas, and Regions. With 650 community-based Regions engaging almost 400,000 players and 70,000 volunteers annually, AYSO delivers consistent programs nationwide. Thirteen Sections and nearly 100 Areas provide oversight and support, while each region—the foundation of AYSO's grassroots efforts—is managed by volunteer Regional Commissioners and Boards, with backing from Area and Section Directors. Together, this network ensures high-quality programming in nearly 700 communities across the country.

Building on its nationwide network, AYSO offers a diverse portfolio of programs designed to meet the needs of players of all ages, abilities, and interests. These programs provide structured opportunities for skill development, recreational play, competitive experiences, and lifelong engagement with the sport.

  • Adult Soccer – Engages players of all ages and skill levels in fun, recreational, and competitive formats, from pick-up games to full-field 11v11 and futsal.

Governance
Central to AYSO’s impact is its dedicated board, which unites leaders from the worlds of sports and business. Some members are former executive members from within AYSO’s own ecosystem, while others are seasoned business executives, collectively providing diverse expertise and perspective. This coalition comprises dedicated volunteers who ensure the programmatic and business success of the organization. Together, their vision and unwavering commitment not only guide AYSO’s mission but also ensure that the organization effectively harnesses the unifying power of sport.

Today, the Board of Directors comprises eleven distinguished professionals. AYSO is governed by a President-led governance model, with the president supported by a Secretary, Treasurer, and a Board of Directors. This structure centralizes leadership while distributing responsibilities across officers, ensuring operational efficiency, financial accountability, and representative decision-making that advances the organization’s mission

The full Board meets quarterly every year while the executive committee meets on a more frequent basis.
