Steve Wechsler, President and CEO of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, discusses the history of REITs, the current policy agenda, and the impact of institutional real estate, and REITs specifically, across the global economy.

It wouldn’t be far from the truth to say that many months are  “REIT month” on this podcast, however, in this two part series, we are focusing on REITs in our September podcasts.

First up is Steve Wechsler, President of Nareit, the trade association for the REIT industry. He shares the inside scoop on the evolution and growth of the REIT structure that has grown into the core model of institutional real estate ownership in the United States and now, across the world.  From historical rabbit holes on the evolution of the industry and creation of the modern REIT in the 90’s, to lessons in scaling and vision, Steve’s perspective is essential to understanding how we got here and the road ahead. This is especially important during an election year.

The impact of innovative thinking, real estate’s role in the political landscape, and the history of REITs as we know them today, are a few of the themes in this episode. In part two, we’ll hear from Matt Kelly, the CEO of JBG Smith and the current Chair of Nareit.
