Position Summary:

The Director, Engineering Design is responsible for overseeing the engineering design team’s work efforts including design and technical review on new construction, renovation projects, and significant system upgrades, as well as advanced technical troubleshooting within the Johns Hopkins Health System and School of Medicine teaching, healthcare, and research facilities.

The Director ensures that all building systems, including but not limited to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, fire suppression, and building automation systems, meet performance specifications, regulatory requirements (such as The Joint Commission, NFPA, AAALAC, etc.) and the needs of a mission critical and complex academic medical center environment. The Director collaborates with the Director, Engineering Operations in developing sustainability initiatives focused on achieving institutional goals and works with the engineering design teams for implementation.

This role requires extensive technical expertise, strong organizational skills, a collaborative spirit, and a comprehensive understanding of healthcare and research operations and compliance. Prepares staffing and budgetary plans and manages resources to achieve department’s goals. Performs general managerial duties such as supervising staff, planning, scheduling, budgeting, data analysis, reporting, and performing presentations. Coordinates training and other programs to develop and enhance individual technical and management skills and to ensure the retention and career advancement of employees in the department.

This work is performed under the minimal supervision of the Vice President, Facilities Planning + Design.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Acts as a bridge between facilities engineering operations, capital projects, regulatory compliance and sustainable initiatives.
  • Oversees the strategic planning for the engineering systems for the Health System and SOM.
  • Leads the management of the engineering specifications (hospital, outpatient, and research).
  • Leads engineering investigations and design oversight for master plans, feasibility studies, and capital projects.
  • Reviews and/or leads MEP portions of facilities assessments.
  • Coordinates with engineering operations for lessons learned and continuous improvements for design and specifications.
  • Prepare executive level reports and presentations to communicate strategic infrastructure status.
  • Supports Engineering Operations for troubling shooting issues.
  • Supports The Joint Commission efforts across JHHS.
  • Expected to develop and maintain the facility engineering master plan, engineering specifications and provide engineering leadership on-going capital projects.
  • Significant interaction with researchers, clinical providers, and staff.

Additional Considerations:

Salary Range: $208,000 to $250,000

Bonus Target: 10% incentive bonus

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or equivalent progressive experience in the design/management of major capital projects. Master’s degree preferred.
  • A high level of analytical ability is necessary to resolve complex technical problems, analyze project logistics required to direct work in a large and complex organization.
  • Extensive knowledge of building healthcare facilities and related safety and regulatory requirements, especially - NFPA Life Safety Code, Building Codes, The Joint Commission, Facility Guidelines Code and AAALAC – Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • Extensive knowledge of contracting practice and language, as well as construction and maintenance terminology and services.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations and codes.
  • Highly proficient in computer applications including Windows, PM Web, departmental e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheet.
  • Knowledge of GAAP.
  • Knowledge of applicable personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ability to integrate with multiple teams, seamlessly moving from problem to problem remaining organized, prepared, and able to execute tasks assigned in a timely manner.
  • 15 or more years in healthcare facilities including 10 or more years related work experience in the management of large, highly complex healthcare/academic medical center and laboratory research projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
