X Games

Vice President, Broadcast & Storytelling

For three decades, X Games has defined progression in action sports by bringing never-before-seen performances and unforgettable moments to audiences around the world. The next chapter is the X Games League (XGL), a team-based global league designed to create sustained fandom through athletes, teams, rivalries, meaningful competition, and season-long stakes.

For a league, the broadcast is the product. XGL requires more than exceptional event production. It requires a showrunner who can turn individual moments into connected stories that give fans a reason to return from one event to the next.

The Vice President, Broadcast & Storytelling will own what fans see and feel across the live and long-form viewing experience. This leader will define the format, build the narrative architecture, select and develop the voices of the league, lead production execution, and introduce new viewing formats that connect with the next generation of fans.

Position Overview:

X Games is seeking a visionary and highly accomplished Vice President, Broadcast & Storytelling to serve as the League Showrunner for XGL. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, X Games Studio, this executive will lead the on-screen product and the end-to-end creative and production strategy for a team-based global league.

This leader will own the broadcast format, run of show, pacing, graphics language, commentary and on-air talent, season-long storylines, live-format innovation, docuseries and shoulder programming, production operations, and production-partner management. The role will ensure that every creative ambition is executable, delivered on budget, and aligned with media-partner commitments.

The successful candidate will combine the instincts of a streaming-native showrunner with the operating discipline of an experienced production executive. They will understand how to build characters, rivalries, team identity, and stakes across a season, while using audience data to improve the show and increase repeat viewing. The Vice President will be on site at every event and will lead a function with budget responsibility and direct reports.

The Vice President, Broadcast & Storytelling will report to the Chief Marketing Officer, X Games Studio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the XGL on-screen product, including format, run of show, pacing, graphics language, and the presentation of a team-based season so first-time viewers can quickly understand the competition and its stakes.
  • Develop the season-long narrative architecture, including athlete and team storylines, rivalries, character arcs, and story payoffs that build from the opening event through the championship.
  • Partner with Sport Operations to ensure competition formats create clear, credible stakes and supply the access, research, athlete information, and data required for compelling storytelling.
  • Lead the strategy, casting, contracting, coaching, and performance management of commentary, hosts, sideline reporters, creators, and other on-air talent in partnership with Legal.
  • Create and launch live-format innovation, including alt-casts, creator-led feeds, athlete point-of-view experiences, second-screen formats, and interactive or betting-adjacent concepts where rights allow.
  • Develop pilots, establish success measures, evaluate audience response, and scale the formats that demonstrate measurable value.
  • Lead long-form programming strategy, including docuseries and shoulder programming that build athlete and team recognition between live events.
  • Greenlight long-form concepts, select production partners, and maintain editorial leadership in partnership with Content & Creative.
  • Lead production operations through the Head of Production Operations, with responsibility for crews, facilities, trucks, delivery specifications, budgets, schedules, and on-time delivery to media partners.
  • Write the creative and operating brief for the XGL broadcast; run a competitive production-partner selection process; and manage the selected partner against the league’s creative, financial, and delivery objectives.
  • Partner with the Head of Media & Distribution before agreements are signed to ensure that promised formats, specifications, and innovations can be delivered at the planned cost.
  • Work closely with Fan Growth & Consumer Revenue to create on-air moments that support membership, loyalty, merchandise, and broader fan development.
  • Use audience retention, minutes watched, repeat-viewing behavior, audience composition, and other agreed measures to identify where viewers engage or leave and to make informed changes to the show.
  • Present options and clear recommendations to senior leadership; maintain strong communication, timely decision-making, and rigorous preparation so there are no avoidable surprises on air.
  • Build and lead a high-performing broadcast and storytelling organization, including direct reports, agency partners, production vendors, and contract talent.
  • Manage the function’s budget and partner relationships with accountability for quality, cost, schedule, rights, clearances, and delivery.

Initial Priorities and Measures of Success:

  • Significant experience as a showrunner, executive producer, or senior creative-production leader in streaming-native sports or entertainment, with accountability for a program audiences followed because of its characters and continuing storylines.
  • Demonstrated record of creating or expanding fandom, supported by specific audience results and a clear explanation of the story strategy that produced them.
  • Experience building or rebuilding a broadcast for a new property, league launch, new season format, or new platform agreement.
  • Demonstrated experience launching live-format innovation, such as an alt-cast, creator feed, new run of show, athlete point-of-view format, interactive layer, or comparable viewing product.
  • Proven ability to manage a production budget, lead an external production partner, and align ambitious creative goals with operational and financial realities.
  • Experience leading teams and established production personnel through meaningful creative or operating change.
  • Data fluency, including the ability to interpret audience-retention curves and other viewership measures and translate insights into programming decisions.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary sports media, streaming behavior, creator-led content, social viewing patterns, and the expectations of younger audiences.
  • Exceptional creative judgment, executive communication, decisiveness, and comfort operating in a fast-moving environment with active senior-leadership engagement.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and to work on site at every X Games event, including nights, weekends, and holidays as event schedules require.

Preferred Experience

  • Established credibility in action sports and the ability to build trust with athletes, creators, and industry stakeholders.
  • Docuseries, unscripted, or other long-form storytelling credits.
  • Experience delivering global, multi-market broadcasts and working across multiple media-partner requirements.

Leadership Profile

  • Visionary storyteller — sees the complete season, not only the next event, and can translate strategy into a distinctive and repeatable viewing experience.
  • Audience-first — understands how contemporary fans discover, follow, and share sports and entertainment, particularly younger viewers.
  • Creative and operational — pairs bold editorial instincts with command of budgets, schedules, production partners, rights, and delivery requirements.
  • Direct, fast, and decisive — presents clear options and recommendations, makes timely decisions, and maintains momentum under live-production pressure.
  • Innovative and action-oriented — tests new formats in market, learns from results, and scales what works rather than leaving ideas at the concept stage.
  • Data-literate — uses retention and engagement information as an editorial tool, without losing sight of creative quality and brand identity.
  • Collaborative — works effectively across Marketing, Media & Distribution, Content & Creative, Sport Operations, Fan Growth, Legal, production operations, and outside partners.
  • Talent builder — attracts, coaches, and develops on-air talent, production leaders, creators, and partners while creating accountability around a shared creative vision.
  • Credible and composed — can lead established crews through change, engage constructively with senior executives, and make sound decisions when the broadcast is live.

Compensation

  • Final compensation will be determined based on the successful candidate’s background, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. This is a full-time, exempt leadership position.
  • Additional compensation, benefits, and eligibility terms will be provided as part of the formal offer process.
